Overview

The SL28 variety is most commonly associated with Kenya, but this lot from Tanzania’s Ngila Estate beautifully showcases what the variety can achieve just across the border.

We approached this roast with espresso in mind, focusing on highlighting a distinct, jammy blueberry note that defines the cup. What makes this coffee particularly interesting, though, is its versatility.

Brewed black—whether pulled as a shot, plunged on an AeroPress, or poured as a filter—it’s vibrant and fruit-forward. But where it really surprised us is in milk. The blueberry note is structured enough to cut right through, making for a really distinctive, sweet flat white.

Origin

Situated at 1,500–1,600 meters above sea level on the edge of the cloud forest surrounding the Ngorongoro Crater, Ngila Estate is a breathtaking 100-hectare farm with a rich history dating back to the 1920s. Today, under the direction of Vera Stücker, the Rainforest Alliance Certified estate is renowned for its meticulous approach to specialty coffee and deep environmental stewardship.

Ngila goes far beyond standard sustainability. The estate maintains an 8-hectare wildlife corridor adjoining the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, allowing local fauna—including elephants—to maintain their traditional migration routes. They plant up to 5,000 indigenous trees annually to combat soil erosion and have pioneered biochar production to ensure long-term soil health.

This dedication to the land is matched by their commitment to the people who farm it. Ngila provides fair wages, healthcare, and education funding to a local workforce—many of whom have been with the estate for over 30 years. When you drink this coffee, you are directly supporting a farm that has been actively funding the local Sumawe primary school and championing sustainable agriculture in the region for decades.

The Artefact Specification

We spent the last year rebuilding this roastery from the ground up because the traditional 'artisanal' approach wasn't giving us the consistency we demanded. We’ve replaced intuition with Precision Science—transitioning to data-driven roasting and 100% paper-stream recyclable materials. At Artefact, we don’t guess. We measure.
